PIMA Air and Space Museum
This is a replica of the Wright Brothers aircraft that started it all. Love the Dad telling his son about this historic aircraft. This is the first airplane of hundreds at this museum. An amazing place with all kinds of different aircraft and related displays. Lots of ex-airforce and navy volunteers ready to give expert info on each plane or display. Gord spent two full days here and I spent one. An amazing place.
Gord in a cockpit simulator.
The Super Guppy. A NASA transport plane. This thing is huge and can transport light NASA related items. It's covered with a protective film to keep out the desert sun and blowing sand.
This is a Corsair aircraft whose wings fold up. This plane can land on an aircraft carrier. This was used in the Pacific during World War II. It has a huge 28 cylinder radial engine.
An F104 Star Fighter. Extremely fast 60's fighter. Canada used them as well, but then they were called CF104's.
This is part of the Davis-Monthan storage facility. It's called the graveyard as most of the planes are now scrap or sold to foreign countries. Again, rows and rows of bombers, helicopters, fighters, etc.
Jet engines waiting to be scrapped for their precious metals, including gold! Want to buy one?!
More planes awaiting their fate in the graveyard.
A MIG 29 Russian fighter still being used today. Sexy and aggressive!
A rare Bell P39 Airacobra being restored in one of the hangers. Engine is in the center of the fusalage behind the pilot. A shaft then runs forward to the prop.
